Happy last Friday of August! I hope you enjoy this Labour Day long weekend 😊 The last Friday of every month is My First Quilt interview day, and this month Lori De Jarnatt is sharing the story of her first quilt. Lori lives in Central Oregon with her hubby and 4 legged dog. When she's not quilting or teaching quiting, she's hiking, backpacking and traveling.
Lori's first quilt is an impressive one, that's for sure!
What year did you make your first quilt? What prompted you to make it?
1993
My SIL asked if I wanted to take a beginner quilt class at the Stitchin' Post in Sisters, Oregon. I said YES and have never looked back!
What techniques were used in that first quilt? Did you quilt it yourself?
We made a sampler with a variety of techniques and blocks. I machine quilted it and had no idea what I was doing.
Who taught you to make the quilt?
Jean Well, owner of the Stitchin' Post in Sisters, Oregon.
Are the colours you chose for your first quilt ones you would still choose today?
I like what I chose, but wouldn't necessarily ever choose those fabrics to make another quilt.
Did you fall in love with quilting right away? Or was there a gap between making the first quilt and the next one?
We lived in a small house with 2 little kids, so although I loved piecing and quilting everything was kept in a small area in my closet, so only took it out sporadically.
Where is the quilt now?
In my possession that I share at every one of my trunk shows!
Is there anything you wish you could go back and tell yourself as you made that first quilt?
Nope, Jean Wells was and is an amazing teacher. She was very relaxed and confident in teaching us how to choose fabric and use tools. There were no quilt police in her class, she led with kindness and so much encouragement. I'm so happy she was my first quilt teacher.
Thank you for sharing your first quilt with us, Lori!
