Snow Day Sparkler

As soon as Mathew, Mister Domestic, shared that he had a Snow Day fabric line coming out, I knew I had to make something with it! After all, I love snow and playing in the snow. Plus, since I babysit for teachers, I love snow days! A snow day means a sew day and maybe a snowshoeing day if we get enough snow. The other morning I had my tea, a fantastic book (love the whole series!) and my new quilt, just wishing for a snow day 😊

I made a baby size version of my Sparkler pattern, using 5 of the prints from the Snow Day line, plus Art Gallery's solid in sandstone. The Sparkler pattern is available in my Etsy shop.

I love a good text print, especially when the text goes every which way so I don't have to pay attention to make sure it's right side up. Of course, it wasn't until after the quilt was finished that I realized the text in this print actually only goes in two directions, but it still never really looks like the fabric is upside down.

Aren't these hats, scarves and mittens adorable?

These snowflakes look like they've been cross stitched, to me.

I used Aurifil 50 wt to quilt meandering snowflakes all over. Of course, they had to be white! It's subtle on the sandstone backing, but the snowflakes don't blend in completely. I purposely didn't worry about making the snowflakes perfect, so the arms aren't all even and the travel stitching isn't always exactly on top of the first line. I was aiming for loose and fun, rather than perfect.

As an aside - Is 2021 your year to learn free motion quilting? Registration for HollyAnne's Free Motion Quilting Academy is now open. That's 12 weeks of free motion quilting instruction that covers everything from adjusting your tension to stitching feathers. If you take the course, you could be a quilting rockstar by the summer.

All while I was making this quilt I had visions of going snowshoeing and taking pictures of it out in the woods, but we've had an unusually warm winter so far and have had plenty of rain and hardly any snow. Usually by now we'd have snowbanks on either side of the driveway, but as you can see here there's nothing.

I'm torn between enjoying the spring-like temperatures and wishing I could go snowshoeing. As my father pointed out, though, one thing about Newfoundland is we can be sure winter will arrive eventually.

Since I couldn't take pictures out in the woods, draping it over the baby gate I use to keep the child care littles contained seemed appropriate for this baby quilt. Not quite as picturesque, maybe, even if I did clear all the toys out of the frame first, but still appropriate.

This is the third time I've made a quilt using my Sparkler pattern. You can see the original and the blue version I made for my husband. The pattern is available as a PDF or a printed pattern, with free shipping.

The Snow Day project party is a 4 week long party, so head over to Mathew's blog to get the full list of participants and see all the amazing Snow Day creations!

  6. Can the main colors be jelly roll 2.5" strips or are they larger? Did not see any fabric dimensions. I would like to know before buying pattern. thx

    1. Hi, Chris, I hope you see this since you are a no-reply commenter. The strips are wider than jelly rolls :)

  8. Also love the quilting! I can never get stars or snowflakes to work and this looks just right! On the baby gate you have this on point, maybe I'll try that too. Thanks for sharing this!
