Hexie Stars Finished!

I have finished my Hexie Stars mini quilt! The hexagons with the stars inside were designed by Renee of Nellie's Niceties.
I absolutely love how it turned out.  It was fun planning how to quilt each section, though the stars themselves had me stumped for a while. I drew designs on a piece of waxed paper and then laid that on top of a star to test the designs. I think I tried three designs before finding one I liked.
The flower in the middle of the star looks complicated but it was actually really simple to do. And I love spirals.
I love pebbles too. I was a little worried after I stitched the first of the aqua sections though...it looked like I had stitched a pair of thong underwear! Hopefully that doesn't stand out too much now that all the sections are quilted. My echo quilting could still use a little work. None of those sections look as neat as I would like, but I figure this is one more quilt that counts toward the 10,000 hours of practice they say it takes to master a skill.

As much as I love the front, I think the back is my favourite part. I always use the same colour thread in the bobbin, which makes for a pretty design on a solid backing.
I made this mini as one of my three craft it forward gifts, which means this is my second finish for this quarter of the Finish a Long (you can find my quarter 3 list here). I don't want to say which of my three craft it forward recipients it is for, since I'd like it to be a surprise when it shows up in her mailbox.

I added the fast triangles to all four corners. I'm not sure how she will want to use the mini, so this way it is ready for hanging if she wants, and she can choose to hang it horizontally or vertically.
Looking at that picture, I really think a whole cloth quilt is in my future. And maybe sooner rather than later.

I'm linking up with I Quilt, NTT, TGIFF, Can I Get a Whoop Whoop, Finish it Up Friday. Oh, and Fabric Tuesday too!

  2. The thong comment had me laughing out loud, Leanne. I can see it, but I didn't without your prompting. The backing is gorgeous, and I think you would make short work of a whole cloth quilt - I keep thinking it would be fun to do one, too!

  3. This is fabulous - reminds me of starfish for some reason. I think your work would be amazing in a whole cloth quilt.

  5. It's fantastic! I really love these small projects, I should make more of them myself! I didn't see thongs until you said it and it took a minute. Now - it might be all I see but it is in the most positive of ways! Congratulations, it's beautiful. :)

What a great idea to add the triangles to the back so the recipient can use it as they please.

  8. I love FMQ so this was going to be a hit with me. I agree, the back is great - so you have 2 quilts for the price of one. As for the thongs - I had to look hard before I found them so I wouldn't worry. It would never have crossed my mind if you hadn't said.

  11. I really like this - I think the quilting is terrific! And I never noticed the "thong" until you pointed it out! :) The spirals on the stars remind me of seahorses. Isn't it funny what we see in our quilting? LOL
