S'Witched

Welcome to my stop on the Villa Rose blog hop! Today I'm sharing my version of the S'Witched quilt, which was so much fun to make. There are giveaways happening as part of the blog hop, so be sure to read right to the end of the post and visit the other bloggers to see their quilts and enter their giveaways, too. Who doesn't love prizes?

Before I share my quilt, I have a couple of other quick things to share 😊 First, on Thursday, registration will be opening for my third annual QAL and devotional journey leading up to Easter. This year it's called Women of Wisdom and the 40 daily devotions will help us glean wisdom from the stories of women in the Bible. Wouldn't it be great to have more wisdom? Edited to say, registration is now open! You can register here.

And second, if you're wanting to get your scrap situation under control, download my free PDF guide, Escape Scrap Overwhelm. It'll help you get those scraps sorted and stored in a way that makes sense for the kinds of quilts you like to make. Just imagine the beautiful scrap quilts you can make when your scraps are easy to use!

Okay, on to my S'Witched quilt!
S'Witched quilt | DevotedQuilter.com
The Villa Rose blog hop is highlighting 5 Fast & Fun patterns. The whole pattern for each quilt fits on one side of a postcard, so you know there's nothing complicated about them 😊 You can get the bundle of patterns here.

S'Witched uses 10" squares. I don't usually buy pre-cuts, so I dug into my stash to find pinks, purples and yellows to cut my own squares. I was surprised to find how many of my stash fabrics were not quite 10" wide, so it took a little while to find enough fabrics that were the right size and worked well together. I got there in the end, though! Once everything was cut, the top came together quickly.

At 54" wide, it's a little narrower than the throws I usually make, which meant it fit perfectly onto one of the batting off-cuts I had. It's one of the pieces of batting I always pull out because I think it's going to be wide enough, only to find out it's just a little too narrow, so it felt great to finally use it up! Of course, I could probably save myself that trouble if I measured my batting scraps and stuck a note to each one saying its size, but I've never gotten around to that.

I very rarely piece my backings, other than a seam to make yardage wide enough, but I convinced myself to piece the back this time. I'm not sure how making a back with so few seams feels like way more work than piecing the front, but it does. And yes, Nathan was holding it upside down - you can see the label on the top corner 😆

Since some of the fabrics on the front had hearts, a meander with scattered hearts seemed like the perfect quilting design. I chose Aurifil 2560 (Iris) for the quilting. It really shows on some fabrics, especially the solids...

and blends in on others.

I tried to quilt it fairly large, which meant it went just as quickly as piecing the front. A few small hearts snuck in, though! They always do!

A solid pink binding finishes it off nicely.

I mentioned giveaways, didn't I? Before we get to them, though, here are the rest of the participants in the blog hop. Be sure to visit them to see their beautiful quilts and enter their giveaways, too!

And now, the prizes! Two winners from my blog will win a set of the 5 Villa Rose Fast & Fun pattern cards. Three more winners will win a surprise from the blog hop sponsors. And another two names will be entered to win one of two grand prize boxes. That's a lot of prizes, I know.

The giveaway will close at 11:59 on January 29th and prizes will be shipped in February. International entries are welcome and winners outside the US will win a digital pattern card collection.

To enter, just leave me a comment and tell me what your fabric scrap situation is like. And remember to download the Escape Scrap Overwhelm PDF if you want to get your scraps organized and easy to use 😊

  6. My scrap situation is very unorganized! I have scraps in bags and boxes with no organization at all. I love your version of S'Witched. It really pops with the bright colors. And I love the backing - especially the larger piece of fabric.

  7. I currently have a fairly lareg tub of scraps that I need to go through, sort, organize and cut into usable pieces. I like the Bonnie Hunter scrap builder plan. Thanks!

  8. I have two tubs of fabric stored outside and a set of drawers inside the RV - and one very patient hubby! We're full timers so it's hard to keep my "inventory" down to a manageable size! :-)

  9. I am overwhelmed by scraps, and my goal this year is use them up!!

  10. I've got strips, 10" squares, and 5" squares organized to the max. So much that any new scraps are not being dealt with! Eeek!

  11. I really like this quilt. I can see this as a great way to use fabrics that I don't want to cut. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has this problem. Jo sent me.

  12. Right now my scraps are sorted by color in clear plastic shoe boxes. I'm looking forward to reading your pdf on scrap organization.

  13. Love seeing this quilt made from stash fabrics, though I do have a lot of 10" squares sitting around! My scraps are an ongoing project. I have some cut down to useful sizes and some "chunks" in a bin in case I need a larger piece. Just need to find a project or two to use them in.

  14. My scraps are organized by color. I follow Bonnie Hunter's scrap organization methods with a few tweaks to individualize to my personal usage of scraps. I LOVE scrap quilts and definitely make more scrappy quilts than planned color quilts. Your quilt is beautiful and I love the bright colors. Thanks for sharing!

  15. My scraps are organized by size--10" squares, 5" squares and 2 1/2" strips and squares, plus some random sizes in cubicle baskets. Your quilting looks great!!!

  16. Jo sent me. I like the controlled scrappiness of your S'Witched quilt. I'm seeing giant four-patches -- that would make the quilt quick to put together. I do have large enough scraps to make S'Witched but I'm more excited for you that you got to use your batting piece. "Using things up" is always on my mind.

  17. My scraps are sorted not big pieces and little pieces.very little pieces go back not a bag and are donated to kindergarten classes. I just used a bunch of pink scraps for my Project Quilt Challenge.

  18. Your quilt is sew bright and fun. Love it. I mainly make scrappy quilts and have my scraps organized by color and cut in usable sizes that I commonly use. I will be looking at your PDF on organizing scraps as I am always on the lookout to see how other people sort their scraps. ryarolim@gmail.com

  19. Your quilt is beautiful! My bigger scraps are sorted by colors. I also have strips in 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2" and 3 1/2". I also have squares in those sizes. Thanks for the info on organizing .scraps

  20. My scraps are sorted by color, and I try to keep 1.5, 2, and 2.5 inch strips together in rolls.

  21. Jo from Jo's Country Junction sent me. My scraps are a mess and are mostly small so this pattern won't work for me unless I scale it down.

  24. Nice quilt for the challenge! My scrap situation is kinda sad, I have bins of strings. Some strings are cut for different projects which I just don't seem to have the time for. But I will try to make a few quilts from them for donations this year.

  30. So fun to see your version of Switched - I made this pattern too and it looks very different. I love looking at a variety of interpretations of the same pattern because fabric choice is often what brings a unique quilt.

  32. I would have had to cut from yardage as well. It's lovely and your heart quilting is beautiful. Congratulations on the finish and for using up that scrap batting!

    ReplyDelete
  33. My scraps are sorted by color, but the amount is pretty tragic. I need more hours in my day! I have taken to piecing some backings from smaller chunks of fabric--think FQ or large squares just to use up more, And finding the right size leftover batting is always rewarding!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have this pattern!!! It stares at me everytime I sit at my sewing machine!! My small scraps are going into dog pillows. The larger scraps are cut into 2.5, 5" squares and then strips if they are long enough.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Your quilt is so pretty! I love the heart quilting on it!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I cut all my scraps to precut sizes and I keep them together by the fabric lines. I am newish to quilting to I don't have a lot of scraps. I read somewhere to cut them as I am working on a project and since I have only done a few projects, they all fit in one small plastic bin. Love your quilt!

  37. Jo sent me!
I sort my scraps by color and have several sizes I cut them into based on a couple favorite patterns.

  38. Oh my goodness - I love the colors in your quilt! It's so bright and cheerful!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I cut small scraps into squares (1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 inch) and sort by size. I have some scraps that were given to me in bags and sorted by color or theme of fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The small pieces left from cutting out fabric are cut into one inch to one and a half inch for future String Quilts and stored in a container. My Christmas fabric scraps are stored together, baby fabrics by color, and others by designer collections.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have recently started trying to get my stash under control. I am now cutting my scraps into 2.5 inch strips or squares. I am keeping it simple and just the two types for now. I am hoping to make a 2.5 inch rainbow scrap quilt in the future. the strips seem like they will be jelly roll friendly as some point.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I try not to keep my scraps as I don't want to clutter the small space I have to sew in. I usually give them away.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nice bright quilt looks very nice, I have scraps everywhere in boxes and totes and mixed in among everything no system at all and by the way Jo sent me here.

  44. Chaos! Thanks for joining the Blog hop. Love you ideas for scraps

    ReplyDelete
  45. this would be such a fun pattern to make with Kaffe Fassett and solids

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love this pattern and have been thinking about dipping into my stash of Kaffe prints and shot cottons to make it. It could easily be sized up or down.......possibly a baby quilt on the horizon. I don't think of them as 'scraps', just small pieces of inspiration waiting to be put to use. peggibarrett808@yahoo.com

  47. Most of my scraps are under control, sorted by color in bins on a bookshelf under my pressing table!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love the hearts! My scraps are out of control and need a new system! What is the definition of scrap?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I just have a big box with scraps of all different sizes and colors. I just started pulling them out and sorting by color, but it seems like it might also be useful to pull some very skinny scraps aside for a future string quilt and leave the larger scraps aside.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love the bold colors! This quilt pops :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love your version of S'Witched! The colors are great! My scraps are in plastic tubs-not much organization though!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well done. This is simple but yet so striking. I gave away most of my scraps, but I'm trying to tame the ones I do have.

    ReplyDelete
  53. What a fun quilt. And I love the quilting...so appropriate! I have followed the Bonnie Hunter scrap system and so have my scraps chopped into useable bits. I used to take the scrap bin down to my moms and cut them up while I visited with her. She is now gone so I take them to mini group sometimes and get them taken care of at least quarterly!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks for the scraps update! I've started doing precuts with mine, and cut the largest pieces first (10 x 10) and work down to 21/2 inch strips. All are sorted in clear plastic refrigerator bins. Looking forward to doing Switched, I'll use some of my scraps!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I love how you made the S'witched pattern Looks so great. My scrap situation is kind of out of control. Hoping to get a handle on it this year.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have a few bags/boxes of scraps that I really need to go through! I love scrap quilts but tend to pull fresh pieces from my stash rather than shopping in the scrap bags! Your quilt is beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  57. This quilt looks like it's fun to work on. it looks like something I could use some of my scraps on .right now my scraps take up 3 large sweater boxes and I've cut some into 5 inch squares and 2 1/2 in squares and pieces. I could probably piece them together and get a really scrappy looking quilt in this pattern

    ReplyDelete
  58. My scraps??? Oh my goodness! I have boxes and boxes of scraps that I have been trying to sort into 2.5 and 5 inch strips and squares. I think I have enough to last me a couple of lifetimes.

    ReplyDelete
  59. That is such a simple design, but makes a beautiful quilt! I'm in the blog hop, too, but hadn't looked at how Switched was constructed until today. This really would make a great quick quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  60. My scraps are semi-organized...except for the two large bins hiding in the closet.

    ReplyDelete
  61. My scraps are organized loosely after Bonnie Hunter's scrap users system, in sizes I use frequently. I love going to my boxes of WOFs, squares, bricks and HSTs to create my scrappy quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Love your version of S’witched and I totally hate piecing the back but to do it…to use oup scraps or extend the width…often the problem. My scraps…some are organized, some are not. I do strips, some 2 1/2” squares, strips, and some triangles for 2 1/2” and then collections…to be used at a later date. I have more than I like to use so I give them away sometimes to people who like scraps.

  65. My fabric scrap situation is pretty well organized. While I am piecing a quilt it can get pretty messy, but I always try to put all my leftover scraps into the appropriate bin when I finish a quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  66. My scraps?? I have too many, too much fabric, too little time! I finally saw that the S'witched pattern is just giant 4-patches.

    ReplyDelete
  67. WAY too many scraps. I finally started sorting them by color. I agree that it does seem to take much longer to piece a backing than it does to make the top. I also should label the size of my batting scraps.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I have a ton of scraps but they are pretty well-organized using plastic drawers, and bins I made out of scraps to hold smaller pieces. I love your bright and happy quilt, and oh MY - I want to drop everything and go make it... must resist for now!

  69. Love the use of scraps, Im a beginner but am collecting many scraps!!! Beautiful creations, Villa Rosa is how I learned!!! Tricia Maloney is my Teacher!!!

  70. Your S'Witched quilt is great, I love bright colorful quilts. I'd say I have my.scraps under control. When my scrap basket is full, I take the time to cut them into 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2 inch striips or 2, 2 1/2, 3,4,5 or 6 inch squares. I keep batiks and non-batiks separate. Everything is stored in stackable drawers on wheels

  74. Interesting that you asked this question... I just rearranged my sewing room earlier today. I have started trying to organize my scraps. I have bags of random strips, 1 bag of selvedges, a box where I started collecting 5", 4", 3" & 2.5" blocks... & another container with 1.5" blocks. I love the idea of now trying to keep it all organized

    ReplyDelete
  75. Oh, I'm loving the heart quilting you used! I need to practice that so I can try it myself. My scrap situation is truly a situation. It is not sorted or organized in any way besides the scraps being stuffed into tubs, bins, baskets and scattered on the floor. SOS!

    ReplyDelete
  76. S'witched is a great pattern! I love the fabrics you used! I honestly don't want to talk about my scrap situation ... I have too many ... regular scraps are organized by colour, Island Batik scraps are all in one tote ... I have bins of 2" and 2.5" scraps ... I have too many scraps ... I've requested your free download ... I'll let you know if it helps! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  77. I have a few tubs with scraps that were "once upon a time" much neater than they are now. One for "blue/green/purple" another for "red/pink", well you get the drift. I always feel like I won the jackpot when I burrow for one and find a piece big enough! FYI, the colors you used on S'witched are fabulous....that quilt just pops..

  82. Just downloaded your Escape Scrap Overwhelm. I'm always looking for new ideas to tame my stash although I do have them sorted by color and keep 2 1/2 strips separated. I often have the same problem that you do--when I looking to use larger pieces, like 10-inch squares, my scraps are always too narrow! Same for my leftover batting. Oh well, I guess that just means we make more scraps! By the way, Jo of Jo's Country Junction sent me to your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I have a bit of scraps- I keep them in two plastic tubs - so its not too out of control. I also think your quilt is nice!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Hi! I popped over from Jo's. I'm glad to see S'witched because I want to make that one as well. I just this past week gathered all my scraps and began cutting. 1.5, 2. 2.5, and 5 inch squares just because I like them! Next step is to organize my bigger than fat quarter size... yikes! I'll be checking out your blog again. carla.infante64 at Gmail dot com

    ReplyDelete
  85. I like your version of S'Witched! That's one I'm planning to make. I don't very often buy pre-cuts either. I heard about Bonnie Hunter's system a number of years ago, and it seemed like a good idea, but I don't really know which sizes I would use the most. I intend to check out your guide today. But I have started cutting 2 or 4 2.5 inch strips off of most of the fabric that I buy when I bring it home.

    ReplyDelete
  86. My scraps are half organized. I need help! I downloaded your pdf! Thank you!

  87. Love your S'Witched quilt! Great colors -- so bright and happy. Your FMQ design is perfect for your quilt and your pieced back is a great idea. As for my scrap collection -- well some of it is organized my 5" squares, 2 1/2" strips, and fat quarters but I don't seem to be able to keep up with cutting everything into my precut sizes. 92. I like your quilt, and i agree with the pieced backing that sometimes it seems to take longer to make that than the top! I have a couple of smaller totes that are always over flowing with scraps, i sew them together when the mood hits me, I've made string quilts and crumb blocks and then i started sewing all my 2-1/2' strips end to end, thinking about a jelly roll race of sorts

  111. This was my least favorite of the quilt bundle, but it is beautiful with your fabric choices. My scraps are so unorganized. I have bins filled with scraps broken down by color. I want to cut them in the Bonnie Hunter style. It is so overwhelming just thinking about it. I will read your guide and maybe that will help me get organized. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Scraps are few as I have not quilted much in the last several years. Uncut fat quarters are abundant - as is the hope I will use them!
Great quilt - the colors you choose really made that pattern sing!

  121. Your Switched quilt is pretty with its bright colors as are your colors for Women of Wisdom. Currently in a couple of SAL using scraps to try and whittle them down. I also don't tend to tag my leftover batting pieces. It would make life easier if I did.

  122. Love the quilting you chose for your quilt. It really adds life to those big blocks of fabric. I keep my little scraps in a glass jar on a shelf above my sewing table so I can see them. My larger scraps live in neat piles on a table near my fabric cabinet or get folded back into the yardage they came from.

  123. I have lots of scraps in all sizes--I could organize them better than I do, but I enjoy looking at them and dreaming of a quilt to make with them!

  125. Hi Leanne! I have scraps! I organize them by color, makes pulling for a quilt much easier. During this blog hop I have thought the Switched design would work for crumb blocks. I tag my batting, too by type, I'm not afraid of frankenbatting!

  126. I use lots of fabric scraps since I love scrappy quilts. But despite regularly using the scraps, I don't seem to reduce the amount I have. Mysterious. I wish money worked that way LOL

  127. Jo sent me. Love your S'witched quilt. I think I have some fat quarters I could cut up for this.

  128. I have some scraps cut into strips, and some are sorted into larger chunks by size. Fat quarters and 1/4 yds are sorted together, half yards are also sorted separately.

  129. S'Witched was a close second choice for me from the 5 Villa Rosa cards. I like your version. I like the pattern for your upcoming QAL as it is very vibrant. Thanks for taking part in the Hop. I have been to some new to me sites with this hop. It has been fun.

  130. Switched is one of my favorite VRD patterns, and I especially like your color choices. As for my scraps, what can I say? They are all separated by color and in a closed multi-drawer unit. Unfortunately, some of the drawers are almost impossible to close, and I know that a scrappy quilt or two is in my future. swalker287 (at) aol (dot) com.

  131. This is a wonderful quilt. I wasn't sure I liked Switched at first but the more different quilts I've seen the better I like it. Your colors are wonderful.

  132. Jo sent me! My fabric scraps are separated by color and somewhat organized. I feel like I could do better though. Thanks for sharing your S'Witched quilt. It's fun!
