TGIFF - The Last Finish of 2020!

Happy New Year! Welcome to the first TGIFF of 2021! Have we ever been so collectively happy to switch to a new calendar?? Here's hoping that 2021 brings new levels of peace, stability and justice for everyone 😊

My finish this week has been almost a full year in the making and I managed to get it done in the last couple of days before the year ended, allowing me to officially cross off one more 2020 goal. Woo hoo! Technically, it's two finishes, but I've always thought of 'the guitar quilts' as one unit, so it's just one goal crossed off. It feels great to get it crossed off, though!

The pattern is Rock Concert, by On William Street, and I love how they turned out!

The foundation pieces in the pattern are marked with which colour to put in each spot, so I just followed directions, though I went totally scrappy rather than using only one fabric of each colour. So the quilts are the same, but different.

Here's a close up of just the body of the guitars. For the rest of this post, the pictures were taken after the quilts were washed.

As I said in my 2020 goal review, I put off quilting these for a long time (think, months) because I couldn't decide how to quilt them. I felt like the pattern deserved amazing custom quilting, but doing that for two quilts would have taken much longer than I wanted to invest. What I really wanted to do was a quick all over design, but I had to convince myself that was okay. Have you ever had to do that?

Anyway, with the end of the year fast approaching, I really wanted to have these finished so they could be gifted, so I finally quilted them with my go-to loopy loops. They're so relaxing to quilt and, when I remember to quilt bigger, they can fill a quilt pretty quickly. Bonus, they leave the quilt wonderfully soft and snuggly.

Just look at that texture! Warm and Natural batting and Aurifil thread for the win!

We'll be gifting these to two of Aiden's (former) teachers this weekend, as our thanks for all the extra hours and work they invested into him and his music (and all the other students who share a love of music) over 7 years together.

So that's my finish 😊 What finish(es) do you have to share this week? Any Christmas sewing that can be shared now that it has been gifted? Or last minute finishing of 2020 goals? Link up so we can celebrate with you, then go visit some of the other links and celebrate their finishes, too.

  1. Great finish! I feel pictoral quilts are much more approachable, and certainly require a more reasonable amount of invested time than a completely scrappy million piece quilt. No finishes for me this week, although I did get a lot of thread ends cleaned up on my current project.

  4. Both of those guitar quilts are so cool, Leanne! And I know how you felt about the quilting. I felt that way with my long-overdue clam shell baby quilt. It would have looked great with custom quilting, in another universe where I had a year to finish it instead of a few days! Happy New Year!

  5. Oh Leanne, you're so generous with your quiltmaking skills! I admire you for taking the time (you're so busy taking care of children!) to make these for teachers. No doubt they appreciated receiving them. I couldn't help but think that it would be neat if this was a ukulele. :-) That's where my heart lies.

  6. I agree that 2020 was a year we all wanted to say goodbye to. The guitars turned out beautifully.

  7. I love the loopy loops all over! That quilting is just right. There's nothing wrong with edge to edge--that's all I do nowadays. Very nice gifts. I'm sure they'll absolutely love them! (Sorry so late to the comment party!)
